Our clients loved their existing mid-century cottage, however, there was minimal living space and no connection to the rear yard. We devised a scheme of retaining the bones of the existing dwelling, and adding a large open-plan kitchen, dining and living area to the rear with full-height glazing opening to a stone covered deck. This spilled out to the garden beyond and really connected and extended the living area. A small master wing was added, comprising of a bedroom, walk-in-robe and ensuite, as well as a mud-room, which linked the car port to the house and created a ‘wet’ area for post-hiking and gardening adventures as well as a cosy space for the clients’ lovely dogs. The focal point of the home is a double-sided, stone-clad hearth that links the split-levels of the dining and lounge rooms, that allows the heat to warm multiple areas. A ‘pop-up’ roof over the rear extension allows four-sides of high-level glazing and a 4.2m ceiling height, to provide a full-day vista of blue sky and daylight, whilst still managing direct-sun with strategically designed eaves.
